Texas Inventionworks (TIW) enables a community of students from all over UT to explore, create and invent together. Formally, we are affiliated with the Cockrell School of Engineering, but we welcome and encourage applications from students of every discipline, background and experience level. If you are an engineer, scientist, artist, hobbyist or enthusiast with a passion for bringing ideas to life and empowering others to do the same, the TIW team is a home for people like you.

Student Staff Role

The minimum expected weekly time commitment for student staff members is about 10 hours per week. All new hires must complete a month-long training period starting the first week of the semester. Selected candidates will be hired for a minimum of one semester, after which they are eligible to continue in their role, apply for lead positions or participate in summer activities hosted at TIW.

Our student staff have the unique opportunity to grow in a diverse set of technical and team management skills, making them very competitive job applicants. They not only join a talented network but become part of a vibrant community that brings staff back for many continuous semesters.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include shift-based work in highly technical fabrication labs, assisting students in proper facility use, mentoring students in design and fabrication, troubleshooting equipment and offering technical training. Student staff members are organized into specialized teams where they can develop their skills and collaborate to drive positive changes. After successfully completing their first semester, staff are eligible to apply for leadership positions.

You could be a great fit for the team if you:

  • Are curious and enjoy learning new things
  • Find the Texas Inventionworks community engaging and want to make it even better
  • Love to help people and serve as a mentor
  • Seek creative solutions to all kinds of problems
  • Almost always show up on time
  • Enjoy working to make groups become exceptional teams

Application Process

Applying for a student staff role with TIW includes a written application, followed by in-person interviews for selected candidates. We typically start the hiring process for new staff in the middle of each semester. Check our public Discord channel and look for flyers around our space to find out when we are opening our application again.
